SkEye App

SkEye aims to be an advanced planetarium for Android.

Ideas and suggestions are welcome here. For submitting bug reports, it is better to raise a ticket.

Please submit each idea separately. Even if two ideas are related, it helps to track them separately.

  1. change magnitude level

I would like to be able to change the magnitude level of the stars so what I see on my phone resembles what I see with my eyes. I mainly use the app hand held and find it can be a bit confusing at times because there are too many stars on the screen.

I have added the setting for relative scale in Map settings > Stars.

The update (v8.4.0) is being rolled out now.

The absolute and relative scale will take care of adapting the stars to the visible magnitude level.

For catalog objects, the Pro version has a detailed catalog filter.

Thanks for all the feedback and ideas. I have created separate topics for them. If I missed some, do feel free to add a new topic yourself.

  2. Prompt user to exit application

During a session I may mistakenly press the Back button and the application just exits without warning. Consider adding an option to prompt the user for confirmation to exit the application. You may make it configurable for those users who hate to be prompted.

This is now available in the beta channel.

I decided against the “double back” manoeuvre as I thought it a bit inconsistent. You press “back” to cancel something. Pressing it again should cancel the action of cancelling rather than enforcing it. Moreover, if you accidentally hit “back” once, then you are likely to hit it twice.

There is an explicit dialog with a button to exit out of SkEye.

By default the confirmation comes up “Always” but it can be changed in settings to “Never” or “Aligned”.

  3. ability to add Lists of objects ie, Caldwell,Herschell400,etc...

Since there are so many plans or list of objects it would be nice to be able to input these into the program, like you can on some of the star and DSO charting programs

  4. Show Comets, Asteroids

Display comets and asteroids in the Sky Map.

Since there are many of these, in the first phase it might be okay to show only the brighter / near-pass ones.

  5. Improvements to search

    1) Color code currently unobservable entries as another color. Further color coding can be done for objects just above the horizon (alt < 10 degrees).

    2) Setting to filter out objects below horizon completely. (They do get filtered automatically when looking for objects to align, but would be good to have an explicit switch).

    3) Remember the "Sort Objects" setting (it currently initializes to sort by name)

    4) typing "M1" (no space) or "crab" should bring up the "M 1" entry.

There were two things remaining in this thread:

    1. Ability to hide objects below the horizon. This has been indirectly achieved by changing the way search results are prioritized. Now, all objects below the horizon will appear at the bottom of the list when “sort by ease of viewing” is selected. Adding another option would have taken up too much screen space.

    2. The issue reported by Adrian Fabry: Searching for “alpha Eri” doesn’t work. I have posted it separately here: https://skeye.uservoice.com/forums/93533-ideas/suggestions/41872951-searching-alpha-works-but-alpha-eri-doesn-t-wo

  6. add NGC catalog main objects.

  7. Allow for larger screen fonts.

The screen fonts are very tiny on the Nexus 7. The problem is worse at night as extra wide pupils of dark adapted eyes will aggravate any vision shortcomings.

This is now available in version 7.3.x

To change the label font size, open Map settings from Map screen, then under “General” category, you will find the “Label scale” option.

I have started rolling out the release today. It might take couple of days to reach everyone.

  8. Time Machine improvements

    • An option to select 24-hour format for Time Machine. Many are not accustomed to the english time format.

    • Make it easier for to change the year of the time machine.

  9. crash on Samsung Galaxy Ace

I have a recent problem with SkEye. When I Hold my phone above my head to view the sky the app crashes. Skymap and Sky Safari still work perfectly. I have used SkEye for several months but this problem has only just occured. I have uninstalled and re installed but it still crashes.

  10. Save session state

During a session I have a tendency to jump to other applications. The problem is that any settings such as night mode or selected alignment points get reset when switching back to SkEye. Saving the state would make it a lot easier to go back to SkEye. Alternatively, provide an options to keep the application running in the background when the user selects Home or Back (or any operation that would make SkEye lose focus).

This is finally implemented in version 8.1 !!

Alignments are now persistent. The app will remember the alignments by location, even after the app or device restarts.

The alignments are remembered for 18 hours, after which they are automatically deleted. This is to keep the user interface simple.

Version 8.1 is available for beta testing now.

  11. In SkEye Pro, add option to show or hide artificial satellites

(SkEye and SkeyePro are superb apps, thank you for creating them!)

    Fixed in version 6.0.3.

The issue was common to all phones with high density displays.

Marking this as completed. If you still face problems let me know.

The ground plane is available in the recently released version 6.1

Note: you can change the opacity of the ground plane through “Quick Settings”.

    Thanks for creating this idea!

  14. Add configuarable Telrad circles

Add standard Telrad circles as an option to the star map. You can see a good example in the Palm PDA software found at http://www.aho.ch/pilotplanets/. See pg. 25 of their manual.

There are now smarter Telrad circles in SkEye which show their diameter in degrees and also show the directions like North, South.

However, the circles are not configurable.. they scale automatically according to the current zoom level. I think this might be sufficient, but please let me know if it isn’t.

  15. update the app to work on 1080p phones.

As of right now, SkEye force closes on launch on Full-HD phones like Sony Xperia Z or Samsung Galaxy S4. This should be fixed to make the app available for newer generations of smartphones.

  16. Polar Alignment...

I would like to know if its possible to use SkEye to perform a polar alignment of my equatorial wedge/fork SCT for use with astrophotography? It does not seem so obvious to me how it could be done as one must essentially figure out the relative orientation of the mount's axes to the celestial axes and then give the user some info about how to realign the mount's degrees of freedom. I am in the Southern Hemisphere and it is very difficult to perform polar alignment here.

Polar alignment through SkEye Cam is working well in multiple tests. The accuracy achieved can be within 5 arc-minutes or better.

In contrast IMU based polar alignment is highly unlikely to be accurate. Hence, closing this.

  17. Allow one to search for an item when it is outside of the current display filter settings

NGC 6572 is very small, but viewable from modest scopes once you find it. Setting the filters to allow its display currently clutters the screen to the point of being very hard to see any stars.

Perhaps allowing an option to select from the full list of NGC or IC catalogs and display the object selected would be useful for finding objects like this.

This has been available since version 1.0.

Long press on the location name to bring up a context menu. You can delete the location from this menu.

  19. Support zooming with buttons

Xperia X10 with latest ROM (2.1) does not support pinch gesture.

    Done in version 6.2.3

The day theme is now brighter and should be more readable now.

The “screen dimming when not touched” behaviour is an Android feature. You can change this via the Settings on your phone.
