This was indeed a glaring omission that has now been corrected. Thanks for pointing it out.

Both the free version and pro version now have Eta Carinae in the list by default.

    Done in version 6.2.3

The day theme is now brighter and should be more readable now.

The “screen dimming when not touched” behaviour is an Android feature. You can change this via the Settings on your phone.

  3. make skeye work better in real time

Based on comments received elsewhere, I am assuming that the latest sensor algorithms don’t have this problem.

Add a comment if you still experience this problem.

  5. Classifications

I would like to have the ability to search for and display objects based on magnitude and constellation. Also by type. Galaxy, planetary nebula or globular cluster for example. So say: show all mag 10 to 12 galaxies in Ursa Major.

  6. Catalog Filters : Support landscape mode

In Skeye Pro the catalog facility seems only to operate in portrait mode - could it be made to work in landscape as well??

Sorry for the really late update, but as of today, SkEye version 8.0.2 has good support for Catalog Filters in landscape mode!

If you find any more areas for improvement, do let me know.

Pinch to zoom in and out has been implemented in version 0.9.6

Zoom buttons are not yet implemented, as I think they are redundant and will clutter the interface.

If anyone NEEDS zoom buttons, please feel free to create a new idea for that.

  8. Allow a user to "search" for particular sky coordinates

When trying to locate an object based on a chart in a magazine, I would like to be able to enter RA/Dec or Alt/Az coordinates of an object into SkEye and be directed by the tool to that spot in the sky (without having to specify a star or other object to "search" for). This would be useful for, say, comets that appear for a short time then are gone.

The pro version now contains the entire Tycho2 catalogue.

The free version contains stars upto 9.5 mag.

This was released in September 2021, but I forgot to update here. Thanks for your patience :)

(There was a bug because of which it didn’t actually work until version 0.8.7)

Implemented night mode in version 0.7.5

Note that night mode is available only on Android 2.2+

  11. Bug: Some NGC objects missing

I can't find NGC 1746 (a very nice open cluster in Taurus) in the database. Also missing is NGC 1750. Thanks - great app!

The latest version, SkEye Pro 8.0.2, addresses this (finally).

Firstly, it shows detailed lists of objects for every catalog:

    • List of all objects in each catalog
    • List of objects that have been accepted by the filter
    • List of objects that have been rejected by the filter
    • List of unfilterable objects

Secondly, you can pin any object in these lists by clicking on them. Once pinned, the object is always selected, irrespective of the filter settings.

Thirdly, the Catalog Configuration dialogs now prominently show the number of selected objects and total number of objects, so that there is no confusion about missing objects.

Fourthly, there is now a way to add a custom catalog, by importing a CSV file.

Finally, there is a brand new guide which explains all this. Some relevant sections are:

    https://lavadip.com/skeye/book/screens/catalogfilterscreen

    https://lavadip.com/skeye/book/notes/missingobjpro

    https://lavadip.com/skeye/book/catalogs/customcatalog

Sorry, it has been a long wait. I hope these features will make SkEye…

I have downloaded SkEye for my android tablet and everytime I add my location a notice pops up and force closes and says:
The application SkEye (process com.lavadip.skeye) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

I am running Model I10-50 Android Version 2.3.1

    @cpd and @joe

Please try the newest version 2.20+

It has a completely new sensor manager, which should reduce the jitter. Let me know otherwise.

    Closing this idea for now.

  15. Would like to see the ability to locate the ISS using SkEye. It would make it that much easier to locate through your app.

Since your app makes locating Stars and Planets so much easier, just by pointing ones phone towards the night sky, why not give it the ability to locate and track the ISS International Space Station.

  16. A few usability suggestions

Thanks for this awesome app! A few usability suggestions:

    1) when in manual mode and a search is done, jump directly to the searched object (a la Google Sky Map). I don't see a reason to have the user still have to scroll to the object manually.

    2) When the cursor goes over certain objects, sometimes the name is too long and the upper text wraps to the next line, pushing down the zoom and align buttons, sometimes throwing me off when I'm trying to push them. Fix them in place somehow (e.g. truncate the labels or relocate buttons)

The manual mode now works as mentioned in #3. It now tracks RA + Declination so it automatically compensates for Earth’s rotation. It also works the same way in the Time Machine.

    1. is a hard one, because figuring out the correct truncation size for various combinations of phone size, phone orientation, font style and font size is hard. In addition, some users might not want the truncation, which means an extra option in settings.

Thanks for the ideas. If #2 is still bothersome, please create a separate idea for it.

  17. Alt /Azimuth alignment for easy rough non stellar or daylight alignment

If an object say "Alt/AZ' at 45 degrees altitude, due North was added to the database then a rough alignment could easily be done even under cloudy skies ready for the clouds clearing,or broad daylight avoiding the sun. Skeye would be able to translate the alt/az coordinates to R.A and Dec for the current time and location and commit the alignment. Yes, it would be only a rough, one position alignment , but it's easy to point due North and have the telescope tube at 45 degrees without any reference to the sky. This would be easier than the previously…

  18. Increase upper limit of the "Label Scale" setting

Adding "Label Scale" setting (in Map Settings->General) was excellent idea, however the current maximum of that setting is too small. Increasing the maximum would allow short-sighted users to avoid using eyeglasses during observing sessions.

Thanks for the feedback. I have bumped the upper limit of the label scale to 4 (from the current limit of 2).

If that's not sufficient, let me know. I am hesitant to bump it beyond 4 because it might fail in some unforeseen way.

The changes will be available in SkEye 9.0.

Note: The Pro version is rolling out this month. The Free version will probably roll out next month as it needs some more work.

  19. Southern Celestial pole star

In order to include Sigma Octantis, I had to bump the number of named stars from 1200 to 2400!

I had to also enable searching bayer designations by name. For example, searching for sigma would search for “σ Oct”.

Will be available in next release.

  20. Ability to change date and time

There should be a way to change the date and time of the sky view.
