SkEye App

SkEye aims to be an advanced planetarium for Android.

Ideas and suggestions are welcome here. For submitting bug reports, it is better to raise a ticket.

Please submit each idea separately. Even if two ideas are related, it helps to track them separately.

  1. Globular & Open Clusters

are not alike, so I would like to see more clear distinctions between them on the chart like color code or shape.

  2. Celestial Poles location aid

Provide a permanent, small, highlighted circle around the North and South Celestial Poles.
With the phone or tablet mounted on the scope, this will aid in performing an initial Polar alignment.

  3. Separate sensors and display

Sensors on one device and display on another with the two communicating via blue tooth. So the viewing angle wouldn't be tied to the pointing angle. For example a phone strapped to the ota for sensing and a tablet in hand for viewing.

  4. Overall opacity

I love SkEye, and the night mode is excellent, but I often find even the night mode is still too bright for me and throws off my eye adjustment. Could there be an opacity setting implemented for the entire interface on top of the other opacity settings? If not, even just another opacity slider to take care of the things that don't have one yet would be awesome.

Those of us using OLED displays could benefit quite a bit from that little extra darkness. :)

  5. Option to include Earth's continents, so I can point down and really experience how I'm on a sphere!

I love being reminded the stars are around me at all times. I also love being reminded of the fact I'm on a sphere.

SkEye helps me with the first, which is awesome. Couldn't it also help me with the second?

I'm imagining a very basic map that basically lets me see the shape of the continents more than 20 degrees away from my location. Visualizing that gives me a big thrill.

I'm unaware of any app that does that right now, and I think it'd be mindblowing.

  6. Specify lat / long in degrees and minutes not just decimals

Allow lat / long to be specified in degrees and minutes.

This can be in addition to decimals, because sometimes only decimal values are at hand.

  7. Fixed Telrad circles in traditional sizes.

Since you now support devices without the required sensors for the "virtual DSC's", what would be the possibility of getting traditional Telrad circles that stay fixed in the relative perspective of 1/2, 2 and 4 degrees regardless of zoom. That way if users prefer they can use Skeye in the same way you would traditional star charts. With the current variable circles if you zoom to the point of the 4 degree being the outside circle, the user loses perspective and relative position in the night sky. You're just zoomed in to close to get an idea of where you…

  10. Add more object details

Amazing, definitely the best goto app. Currently have to bounce back and forth to another app for object details tho. A pain. I am looking forward to future updates. I bought the app, keep up the great work!

  11. Add Augmented Reality ...

Would it be possible to use a digital camera input for a background of your planetarium? Just to check if the stars on camera are offset from digital representation on screen? If the cameras in modern smartphones are sensitive enough, of course. And maybe an option to set the transparency level of the planetarium. Just an idea....

  12. Support for Bluetooth Goto

Loving this fantastic app, keep up the work. I am sure others will have asked for Bluetooth goto, same as sky safari.

There is open source code available on Google code with drivers for goto and for Bluetooth serial.

Many standard adaptors out there for Bluetooth to serial. (50 USD)
I suggest you start with skywatcher and celestron as they have largest young users who are learning and will want goto.

Bluetooth is better than cable because frees the mobile from the camera for point and shoot plus less cables to get tangled.

  14. introduce a hysteresis to rotation of labels

tilting the device to an angle of slightly more then 45 degrees causes labels of objects to rotate. The angle for rotating back to the former orientation is about identical, so you can held the device at an angle where label orientation will quickly and repetitively flip between horizontal and vertical.
Adding a hysteresis to the angle at which rotation happens will prevent this.

  15. Show Flamsteed designation for stars (52 Cyg, etc)

This idea originally was about Greek designations, but since that has been implemented for a while now, I am changing this to Flamsteed numbers as per comment.

  16. Filter objects in alignment and search screens

Update by Admin: Changed the title to include all objects (not just stars) and also included the search screen (not just alignment)

I want to filter alignment stars by magnitude. I only need a dozen or so and it is difficult looking through a random list of what the app thinks I want or scrolling through many hundreds of stars sorted by name.

  17. Add user input offset to Azimuth for object

I have a manual azimuth setting circle attaching to the moving base of a dobsonian. I want to use skeye to figure out real time Alt/Az cooords. I do not want to align the base everytime I use it. Instead I will figure out the offset of the needle from North and add an offset to the Az reading for a star to figure out what degree must be under the needle. If Skeye could add it for me in the search window it would help me a lot. The same could be done for Alt, but it is not…

  18. Manual update of satellite TLEs

My only one sky, stars and planet surfer!

I'm a radioamateur and I like follows satellits for watch them in the sky and use with my radio too.

In particular way, I love the ISS - International Space Station.
Due to the frequents altitude reposition, the TLE keps change frequently, so I think is a very good idea add a manual update selecting the file into the sd-card.

    Thank for your great job!

    Cris

  19. The ability to create observing plans.

Great and useful app for our astronomers!.. If i may come with a feature request:
If one could create a observing list beforehand, and then later select these objects.
for example before your viewing session you search a object you want to observe and when you have found it you get the option to "add to observing list"
When your list is ready, skeye saves these objects and then, during your observing session, the user can select these objects one by one and skeye will point to that object.
I hope you understand what i mean.
